Oct 4, 2020

If you are trying to get pregnant, any new sign or symptom that your body indicates can make your heart pounding with excitement. While pregnancy tests and ultrasounds are the most efficient way to be sure-fire about pregnancy, there are some other symptoms you may look out for. In this blog, we will discuss about some of the common early symptoms of pregnancy along with the basic helpful information to manage these with ease.

As every woman has got different physiological characteristics from others, the onset and extent of pregnancy symptoms are expected to vary from one to another. Many women experience those symptoms within a few days of conception, others may take two to four weeks before these symptoms commence and a few of them come across no discomfort at all.

Sore Breasts:

Do you feel tender and swelling breasts? Sore breasts can be considered to be one of the most common early symptoms of pregnancy. Many women experience this breast soreness as a normal part of their menstrual cycle. Unlike premenstrual syndrome soreness of breasts does not go away, rather it will get worse with painful sensation as the time progresses.

Reasons behind it: During the early stage of pregnancy, the level of estrogen and progesterone hormones increase which causes your breast to retain more fluids and feel heavy. In the early stage of conception, these hormones level will grow up making your breast gradually tender. The tenderness and soreness imply that your breasts are getting prepared for the nourishment of your expecting baby.

What to do: Don’t get afraid as you are not the only person having this as an early symptom of pregnancy. You can use a supportive bra having a proper fitting with some extra space to mitigate this discomfort. Hot and cold compression can also be used to get rid of this discomfort if you are comfortable with that.

Darkening Areolas:

The area around your nipples can appear to be darker and larger after one or two weeks of your conception. If you examine deeply you may also notice that the veins in your breast are more visible than usual and little bumps popping up through the edge of your areolas. Sometimes the changes are found to be permanent, sometimes not.

Reasons behind it:  This is one of the most noticeable and common early symptoms of pregnancy. Due to the inclination of the pregnancy hormones level namely hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin), you may get acquainted with this pregnancy experience. Many women have described that their areoles continue to grow and deepen in color as their pregnancy progresses.

What to do: This should not be the cause of concern because it is harmless. Applying hot and cold compression and wearing a soft lightweight bra will be helpful for you to deal with this situation.

Cramping:

Similar to the breasts soreness one of the common symptoms that most of the women experience in their early stage of pregnancy is cramping. Cramping should not be severe. You need to seek medical attention if you are having insurmountable pain.

Reasons behind it:  Many women get confused to differentiate the cramping as early pregnancy symptoms with their premenstrual syndrome. In spite of being very much identical, the internal mechanism responsible for two types of cramping is different. The early pregnancy cramping is associated with the increased blood flow to the uterus and your uterus may be stretching a little. On the other hand, cramping that occurs during your period is because of increased prostaglandins helping to shed the uterus lining.

What to do: In the case of early stage of pregnancy, most of women experience to some extent cramping in the pelvis which is very usual in this situation. Don’t get panicked considering it to be a miscarriage.

Spotting:

Have you observed any pink or brown spotting before your period? Are you confused to find out the relation of this with pregnancy? This could be the early sign of pregnancy called implantation bleeding. Many women have confusion regarding this spotting because they can encounter this irregular bleeding at onset of their period. Until and unless you are tested positive for pregnancy, the spotting can’t be termed implantation bleeding.

Reasons behind it:  After six to twelve days of conception, the fertilized egg traverses through the fallopian tube and resides in the uterus. Then this egg gets itself attached to the wall of the uterus. As the plush lining of the uterus is full of blood, virginal spotting may occur. This is very natural and nothing needs to be worried. As every woman is unique in their physiological behavior you may or may not encounter this symptom at an early stage of pregnancy.

What to do:  Please be advised to take a pregnancy testing if your period is overdue to determine whether this spotting is implantation bleeding as an early sign of pregnancy or not. If it turns out to be negative, write down the date of occurrence of the spotting and the cycle day you were on. Observe the next few cycles to find out any such occurrence of spotting –bleeding in Mid-cycle can be a matter of concern and would require a proper medical diagnosis. Please do visit your gynecologist.

Fatigue :

This is the most embarrassing early symptom of pregnancy to undergo. This will not simply be a loss of energy rather complete exhaustion engulfs the body throughout the first trimester.

Reasons behind it: During the first few weeks of pregnancy, your body is busy working 24/7 to fulfill all the requirements of the expected baby for the next nine months. Your heart is pumping faster to flow more blood to carry nutrients for your baby. At this stage of pregnancy, your blood pressure levels, as well as blood sugar levels, are lower. Those mentioned factors associated with the extra pregnancy hormones estrogen and progesterone produced after conception can make you feel sleepy and tuckered out.

What to do: Don’t forget to take an ample amount of rest. Energy-boosting foods, vitamins, a healthy diet, and consuming plenty of fluids can help you to deal with this fatigue.

Frequent urination:

Urge to pee more than usual? Though this frequent urination may not be the early symptom of pregnancy, in some instances this can be considered to be one of the standard early symptoms of pregnancy which can start after two to three weeks of conception.

Reasons behind it : The HGC hormone begins to increase drastically when an egg got implanted in your uterus. This phenomenon may increase your frequency of urination. On the other side, the swelling uterus puts extra pressure on your bladder and the extra blood flow to the kidneys compels them to produce more urine than usual. Every woman who gets pregnant will definitely have an increased amount of HGC hormone but not everybody will experience this frequent urge to pee.

What to do : There is nothing much to do regarding this until the frequent urination is accompanied by burning which can be the sign of urinal infection. If so, please get in touch with your doctor. In any circumstances, do not reduce the amount of fluid intake.

Missed period:

If you are expecting your motherhood journey you will certainly be excited to observe that your period is delayed or due. This is one of the most classical early signs of conception. The accuracy rate of the pregnancy test will increase the longer you wait to perform this, based on the level of the hCG hormone.

Reasons behind it : When your egg is not fertilized, you have your period every month. The egg breaks down causing the level of the hormones to go down and your body sheds the lining of your uterus. It is obviously a good sign if you skip your period as far as the pregnancy is concerned. It implies that your baby is on board. At the same time, this is completely normal to observe a little bit of spotting at the time your period would have to happen, which is called implantation bleeding. (See above)

What to do : If your cycle is regular, the missing period can be considered to be the early symptom of pregnancy. Check with a pregnancy testing kit for confirmation or you may consult a doctor for more clarification. If you are having an irregular period cycle, this observation may either be a normal skipping of the month or you may conceive.

A heightened sense of smell:

If suddenly your favorite dish smells like rotten fish, you are experiencing, I must say it is one of the most peculiar early symptoms of pregnancy. This is most irritating and sometimes nauseating to the expectant mother.

Reasons behind it : There is no such known reason behind this which makes the pregnant women associated with such an intense sense of smell. According to some physicians, due to an increased amount of the hormone in the body at the time of pregnancy, this bizarre symptom can be noticed. This does not occur to everyone but if you can smell these odd odours, rest assured, you are not the only person having the same. After the end of the first trimester, it is likely to subside.

What to do : Try to stay away from those strong-smelling odours that irritate you. Wash your clothes (odours clutching to fiber) properly with a good detergent and use sweet fragrance to cope up with those unpleasant smells.

Food craving :

Experiencing a strong craving for foods especially spicy and salty during the first trimester? It is one of the most known pregnancy symptoms which most of the expectant mothers encounter. So if you are hungry for a Chinese or continental dish and immediately switch to pickle or jam, it is completely normal.

Reasons behind it : Doctors can’t surely conclude why but according to some experts, this craving behavior is the way through which your body expresses its need. The pregnancy hormones can also be the reason why you experience this food craving.

What to do : Observe your consumption of empty calories whether they are replacing your important nutrients or not. You can try some homemade tasty and healthy snacks which can also provide important nutrients required for your body.

Bloating :

Can gas be a sign of pregnancy? If this question comes to your mind you may get the answer to be ‘positive’. During the pregnancy period, the progesterone and estrogen hormones increase causing many women to face issues related to pregnancy gas. Abdominal pain, bloating, passing gas all will continuously bother you during the nine months span of your pregnancy.

Reasons behind it : Progesterone hormone is responsible for relaxing your smooth muscle tissues including the gastrointestinal tract. This makes your guts to perform sluggishly causing delay to extract the nutrients from the foods and delivering them to your expected baby. For this reason, formation of gas is quite normal at the early stage of pregnancy and beyond. Every mom-to-be experiences bloating at some point during their pregnancy.

What to do : Take normal meals which are easy to digest and avoid gas-causing foods such as fried things, sweets, and junk foods, etc. Eat and drink slowly to refrain yourself from consuming excessive air. Always try to put on comfortable loose clothes to feel comfy. Yoga can be effective in dealing with this discomfort related to bloating if properly exercised. If you are having intensive gas, please get in touch with your medical expert who can suggest you about medication.

Constipation:

Is constipation a symptom of pregnancy? Yes, pregnancy could be the reason behind it. Similar to bloating and gas, constipation is one of the normal pregnancy symptoms which may accompany you for the entire nine months. This particular early pregnancy symptom tends to enhance even more as your pregnancy progresses.

Reasons behind it : Due to the increased level of progesterone hormones which relax the smooth muscle tissues compels the foods to traverse through the intestine more slowly. This incident impacts your digestive system causing you bowel movement to function lazy.

What to do : Consume more fiber-enriched foods and don’t forget to take plenty of water. Besides, you can also add a bit of grape juice to your diet. If you are having an intense problem of constipation, you can call your physician for medical advice. In some instances, changing prenatal vitamins is found to be effective to address this problem because some vitamins have the probability to cause less constipation than others.

Food Aversions:

If you feel repelled by certain foods, congratulations, pregnancy can be the reason to be blamed for this. Aversions or distaste for certain foods is one of the unusual early symptoms of pregnancy. Being a pregnant woman you can experience distaste about any foods specifically eggs, meats, and onions. Craving for foods and aversions are completely contradictory pregnancy symptoms but both can be equally as strong. Like many others, pregnancy symptoms aversions are likely to subside after the end of the first trimester.

Reasons behind it : You can develop nausea as an early sign of pregnancy which can instigate your brain to send a signal for disliking those foods that trigger nausea. These food aversions can also be considered as a warning alarm from your body when it encounters certain foods to be potentially harmful.

What to do : A simple way to manage this is to avoid the foods which trigger your aversions. Try to figure out other substitute foods. If you are feeling distaste for chicken or egg you have to go for any other source of proteins. Similarly, in case of milk, you may switch to yogurt or other calcium supplements. The upshot is that you should not stop consuming foods containing important nutrients required for your body.

Morning sickness, nausea, and vomiting:

Nausea and vomiting are the pregnancy symptoms that may or may not strike early. Morning sickness is a misnomer in this regard because this nausea and vomiting tendency can pop up to bother you at any point in time the day. Studies have shown that women with nausea and vomiting have a lower possible risk of miscarriage compared to others (having no such symptoms). If you are having this symptom, fortunately, you are in good company.

Reasons behind it : Shortly after your conception, the HCG hormone level climbs up which results in pregnancy symptoms like nausea and vomiting to occur. Women having severe morning sickness are expected to have more HCG levels than others. Similarly, Estrogen another hormone that ramps up during pregnancy plays a role in increasing the intensity of nausea and vomiting. Another part of the story depicts those women who are prone to motion sickness or vomiting encounters a massive tendency of nausea during their pregnancy period.

What to do : In most of the cases, this is nothing that requires concern so just try to adjust with the behavior of your body. Eating small meals, taking vitamin B complex or ginger tablets, drinking ginger tea have been found to be effective to minimize this. If you are facing intense problems like weight loss or can’t keep anything in the stomach you should seek medical attention. Please talk to your doctor who can prescribe you medicines (if required) or advice you to mitigate this nausea or vomiting.

Mood swings:

Does your mood fluctuate around the time of your menstrual cycle? The same can be true if you are pregnant. You may experience happiness one minute and sadness in the next. This emotional roller coaster is commonly seen during the first trimester. Not every expecting women experience this mood swing but if you are one of them having this emotional oscillation rest assured because this is temporary and you will be able to get your even-tempered self back again as your pregnancy progresses.

Reasons behind it : There are several factors that impact the mood swing but the most important character of this story is the spike of the pregnancy hormones. Those two hormones progesterone and estrogen can bring about a lot of changes to your mental and emotional state. Estrogen works throughout our entire body including the brain which regulates our mental and emotional attributes such as anxiety, irritation, depression, etc. Progesterone, on the other side, relaxes the smooth muscle tissue causing fatigue, laziness, and sometimes sadness.

What to do : Until and unless you observe the onset of severe depression or anxiety there is nothing much to do with it. But if you do encounter frequent and severe fluctuation of mood accompanied by depression and anxiety, contact your medical advisor for assistance.

High basal body temperature:

Are you charting your basal body temperature to be higher than normal reading? The basal body temperature rises about half a degree when you ovulate and it remains high until you get your period.

If you are charting your BBT (basal body temperature )and observe the reading remains elevated for two weeks it may indicate that you have got a baby on board. When you conceive, a high BBT is one of the natural pregnancy symptoms which you are expected to observe.

Reasons behind it : Similar to other pregnancy symptoms, the pesky pregnancy hormones are the main culprits yet again. In a normal scenario (when you’re not pregnant) the hormonal level decreases to indicate the advent of your period. But in case of pregnancy with a fertilized egg, the reverse happens causing the hormones to rise. This biological process has a connection with your BBT that makes it to climb up and don’t let the temperature go down after ovulation.

What to do : If you are charting your BBT, enjoy observing those high temperatures reading. If you don’t, in spite of trying to conceive, do prepare a BBT chart to get a clear vision about your cycle. The best time to start charting is the day when your period commences.
